Department of Sociology:

S.S.K.Basaveshwar College was established in Basavakalyan of Bidar District in the year 1967. It was situated beside the famous Tripuranthakeshwar Lake, where Basavanna, who was the minister of famous king Bijjala of KallyaniChalukkyas, founded AnubhavaManatapa, Which is popularly known as the place for religious discourses of Sharanas.


Along with the college, the Department of Sociology was started in the same year, with an aim to comp art knowledge about society, which is very essential for human beings, as remarked by famous thinker Aristotle “Man is a social animal”. Man becomes man only among men” that is society”. Man cannot live alone, if he lives alone either he become god or devil. Man needs society for everything for his birth, work, and enjoyment and even for death also.


The Department initially supported by Sri. S.G.Melkundi, who was a dedicated teacher, and had served for a long time in the Department as a teacher, inspirer, and Principal at Gulbarga and Basavakalyan. Later B.B. Patil joined the service and rendered his valuable services in the development of the department. Later Dr.B.B.Kalagi joined the Department with a new spirit and he created a new interest among the students about the subject. He also pursued Ph.D under the able guidance of Dr.Hamilipurkar, who was a Professor in the Department of sociology at Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, on Scheduled tribes in Transation A case study of Gondas of BidarDist”. He was relieved from the service in the year 2014. Smt. LaxmibaiBankoor, who is serving as Assistant Professor in the Department and has a special interest in rural development, she has also registered her Ph.D at Dravidian University, Kuppam. Another prominent teacher Sri.DevindraKamble has rendered his contribution to the development of the Department. M.Narayanaswamy, Associate Professor, is also serving in the department. In the beginning Sociology subject was introduced at PUC level. Later it was extended to Degree course as an Optional subject. The subject combination choice for the beginners in our College as follows.1.Economics, Sociology, Political Science.2.Political science, Education, Sociology. The Department has some new methods to teach the subject for all classes.


The Department encourages the students to know about Sociology, social system, organizations, other branches of Sociology, through the class seminars, group discussions, home assignments. Teachers’ advice the students to visit some socially important places and get practical knowledge. The students participate in various competitions like Quiz, essay writings, debate with specially relate to social topics.


We have a practice of inviting Experts to the department and arrange special Lectures on so many socially relevant topics like Dowry, Youth unrest, Drug addiction, Corruption, Women emancipation etc. This practice instills among the students a special interest about the subject. Final year students visited prisons, Market yards and industrial spots to get practical knowledge about Prisoners, Labors and industrial workers life style and problems.


Though this area is backward, the students are not lacking behind to optional sociology as one of their optional subjects. Many of them scored good marks in the subject. Number of students have joined M.A, B.Ed, M.Ed course after their graduation. Nearly 80 % of the students have been appointed in various departments like Education, Police, Revenue and Administration.


Though our students coming from Kannada medium, despite that exam conducted by GUG in which our Department students performance is quite satisfactory in the range of 80 to 90%. Some of them are continuing their higher studies by joining Post Graduation, M.Phil, Ph.D courses in GUG and other universities in Karnataka and Central University, Gulbarga. After completing their studies many of them are employed as Teachers, Lecturers, Professors, Police and Army, Serving in Banks, Insurance Sector, in various Government and Semi-government, Working as bureaucrats also.
